What is Psychology?

The term “psychology” is derived from two Greek words: “psyche,” meaning “soul” or “mind,” and “logos,” meaning “study” or “knowledge.” Therefore, when combined, “psychology” literally means “the study of the mind” or “the study of the soul.” In contemporary usage, psychology refers to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, including thoughts, emotions, perceptions, motivations, and more

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior.

It encompasses a wide range of topics and approaches aimed at understanding how humans and animals think, feel, and behave in various situations.

Definition of psychology by different authors:

“the scientific study of observable behavior,” focusing on the measurement and analysis of behavior in response to environmental stimuli.

Goals of psychology:

The goals of psychology are to understand, explain, predict, and influence human behavior and mental processes. By studying why people think, feel, and act as they do, psychologists aim to uncover underlying causes and patterns. This knowledge allows them to make predictions about future behavior and develop interventions to promote positive change. Ultimately, it seeks to enhance individual and collective well-being by addressing psychological issues, promoting mental health, and fostering resilience while also advancing scientific understanding through research and education.
